Putting Staff First

As a small or medium-sized enterprise, a first step to the growth of your business is putting staff first.

You will be relying on these guys to deliver your vision and mission, so you need to ensure you treat them right.

Ask yourself how good are you at putting staff first, and be honest!

As a good team leader, you must learn to put your people first. The success and growth of the business, which you may think are your primary focus, rely so heavily on the performance of your staff – that’s why they must come first.

Take care of your employees and treat them as what they are – your biggest asset.

Putting Staff First

We all know the old saying that there is ‘no I in team’. It is cliched, but it is true.

It isn’t all about you. Your employees are your business, so your team is inextricably linked to success.

Rather than thinking the world revolves around you, as some entrepreneurs tend to, accept that your major responsibility as a business owner or team leader is to manage your team.

You need to build and maintain a strong, talented, committed team. This cannot be done without treating employees well and fairly, and without putting staff first.

How Do I Put Staff First?

Putting your employees first doesn’t involve making unwise decisions that negatively affect the business. Rather, you can put them first by treating them as you would yourself. Everybody deserves to be treated with respect and compassion, which is true in the workplace too.

Here are three ways you can put your people first:

Invest in your Employees

How you treat your employees reflects on your business. If you invest in your team positively, it will reflect on your business. How can you invest in your team? You can enroll them in training programmes to improve their skills, mentor them one-to-one, and provide additional self-improvement opportunities. When they improve, your business also improves. Helping your employees grow enables the growth of your business as well.

Make Your Employees a Priority

Your employees are your most important asset as they are central to the running, development, and growth of your business. To ensure you are putting staff first, prioritise them and their needs. When making business decisions, consider first how your team will be affected and what you can do to mitigate any impact.

Prioritising your staff is really just about treating them right. Give them consideration and respect, pay them a reasonable salary, be polite and kind, see your role as a team leader and take care of your ‘team’.

Listen to Your Employees

An important quality of leadership is being a good listener. How can you lead your team without listening to them? How do you find out what their challenges and ambitions are without listening?

Cultivate the habit of always listening to your employee. Interact with them, invite their feedback, hear and understand their challenges, and appreciate their insights.

If you hear your staff, you can develop solutions to any challenges which are holding back productivity. You may gain insight into the problems and successes of running your business at the ‘coalface’ you were unaware of. The next ‘big idea’ may come from your team.

Final Note

Being a leader or business owner comes with huge responsibilities, chief among which is putting your people first.

I have always made my employees my top priority. I consider them as my teammates more than my staff, people I respect, admire, and want to spend time with. The more comfortable you make your staff feel, the more they want to give back to the business.
