Scale Your Business: Four Crucial Steps

scale-your-business

As an entrepreneur, a time will come when you look at how to scale your business.

This may be as you prepare to launch and plan a growth strategy. It may be shortly after your start-up goes live, to respond to demand or new challenges. It may be that your established company requires transformation.

Understanding the steps needed to scale your business can form the foundations for significant growth. Failing to prepare, of course, can lead to setbacks and failure.

Scale Your Business

As business owners and leaders, we all want to see growth. To achieve this, and optimise our success, we need to have a clear understanding of what is involved in scaling our business and a strategy to deliver.

There are many reasons to look at scaling up. Fresh investment may mean you can explore new opportunities. Overwhelming demand may necessitate taking on new staff and premises and ramping up production. A change in your target market could give you an edge over competitors.

As an entrepreneur, you will keep a constant eye on your customers, market, and competitors and be keenly aware of your firm’s position. You will identify when your company can, and should, consider expansion.

The question for you then is, how do you scale your business? How do you create a deliverable strategy for growth?

Four Crucial Steps

To prepare for growth and expansion, you must have certain key elements and plans in place. Here are four that should be at the top of your list:

  • Mapping out workflow
  • Organising training to ensure that your team fully understands the workflow
  • Designing a monitoring system
  • Setting up your accounting system

Workflow

Workflow maps out how tasks are completed. Before scaling your business, ensure that you have an organised workflow system. Know the number of employees you need, the roles each will play, and what is expected of them. This is a vital step. Employing people without a clear view of their role within the company’s growth plans wastes time and money. Failing to have a defined, measurable strategy to deliver tasks that are key to your expansion plan will compromise your growth. In fact, not having the right people in the right roles conducting the right tasks can negatively affect your business. No one wants to target growth only to experience the reverse.

Training

A clear workflow strategy is important, but what use is it if it isn’t understood or followed? If you take on new employees to fill new roles or create defined targets for existing staff, you must ensure that they know what is expected of them and how they can achieve it. Alongside mapping out a workflow strategy, you need to roll out specific training so everyone knows what they are doing, how, and why.

Monitoring

Once you have a growth strategy, you need to keep a close eye on progress. You cannot just create a plan and then sit back until it is complete with the expectation that it will work. Along the way, things will go wrong. Circumstances will change. Flexibility and adaptability are crucial to keeping your course as new challenges and opportunities arise. If you identify where something isn’t working early on, you can fix it and keep to your overall plan. If you fail to spot it and act, the whole mission to scale your business could come off the tracks. Alongside your workflow plan, create a monitoring system that regularly measures the tasks and targets you have assigned. Depending on the type of industry you are in, you may find existing automated workflow monitoring tools readily available that will help you measure delivery.

Accounts

One measure of growth is your finances. Before you embark on your plan to scale your business, you must ensure you have the necessary resources. But equally important is having a sound accounting system to track your spending and income while you deliver your growth strategy. You need to see where your money is going, where it is coming from, how much cash on hand you have, and how much will be available to invest in the coming months. In many cases, a business is only as good as its accounting. Ensure you have a system that delivers the information and reports you need, when you need them, and one you can rely on.

Scale Your Business – Final Word

When you scale your business, preparation is essential.

Have a plan, define the tasks to deliver that plan, understand and respond to the resource implications, make sure everyone on your team knows their role and expectations, and then monitor the whole process every step of the way to keep it on track.
