Before starting a business, there are things you need to bear in mind and steps you need to follow.
Starting a business is not an overnight endeavour; first, you have to plan it through if you aim to achieve success.
Based on my own experience, I have created a list of guidelines, or ‘rules’, which you may find useful if you are thinking of starting a business.
I hope they can become a step-by-step guide for you as you set up. However, if you have already started your business, these rules will help you too. It’s not too late to retrace your steps and do things the right way this time.
I haven’t just invented these rules. I have used them and they worked incredibly for me in the early days. These rules are designed to help a business survive as a start-up and achieve consistent growth.
Have a Business Plan
Be intentional when starting a business; know what you want to achieve. You need to have a vision, which will drive the business’s purpose and lead you to the destination you hope to reach.
Use Your Influence
No person is an island; you do not have to do it all yourself. Use your influence to get what you want. You can have a trusted partner or seek professional assistance, from, for example, an accountant, lawyer or fellow business owner who can share the burden. The goal is to run a successful business, so don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Develop Good Self-Esteem
Let go of every form of inferiority complex and build your confidence. To get people to believe in you, you first need to believe in yourself. Always hold yourself in an esteemed position and think positively. You are your brand as much as your business and brand are you.
Be Dedicated
Starting a business requires a lot of commitment. It would be best if you were committed to achieving your set goals and vision. To commit means to be dedicated, to be able to give in all that is required. You will get out what you put in and it takes patience along with a degree of tenacity.
Try to Match Your Own Expectations
You started your business with the aim of being successful, and that is how you should keep it. You need to aim for results, good results. Meeting up to your expectations will give you more purpose. Just remember, though, that results don’t come normally overnight.
Timing
In business, timing is everything. You need to know the market will be favourable for you and when it wouldn’t. Time yourself to know what to do at a specific time and what not to do, you need to be both reactive to the market while being proactive as business owner.
Determination
To achieve what you need, you need to persevere. Persistence and a resolve to be resilient will take your business far. You need to be determined to do whatever it takes to excel.
Be a People Person
People do business with people, and you need to develop good customer relationship skills. Having a business will expose you to meeting different people from different backgrounds. Learn how to interact with people, as you never know who you will meet next and what they can do for you or your business or who they could introduce you to.
Make a Move and Follow Your Heart
Take action! After making decisions, follow them up by taking action, don’t procrastinate. You need to learn to make moves, decisions, or develop ideas that cannot come to life on their own. You need to make it happen. Most times, the best advice and ideas come from our heart; you need to use your intuition to do what needs to be done.
My final rule: Believe in yourself and be yourself.
