Why is it important to be truthful in business? Because the best way to win people’s hearts is by being sincere.
Across my website, I talk about the values and vision that have been part of my professional and personal journey. The key to it all is integrity.
Integrity is an essential factor in experiencing growth, in business and as a person.
Being sincere shouldn’t be an option, something you opt in and out of. It should be a default personality trait.
But that comes down to you. It is your decision whether, or not, to be honest at all times. It is the decision of the individual, even in business.
A Little White Lie
To succeed in the business world, being honest is a priority for employee and company owner alike. When revealed, even the slightest untruth – or ‘white lie’ – impacts customer and supplier relations. It can reduce the business turnover, value, and, vitally, reputation.
Most people feel a little lie wouldn’t hurt in business and could, in fact, contribute to assisting company growth. That may be the case initially, but for how long? What happens when the truth comes out?
No Lie is Acceptable
You owe it to your customers, employees, employer, or team to do the right thing at all times.
In the corporate world, many examples exist of even slight ‘omissions of truth’ causing significant damage to business and the individuals involved.
Once lost, it is difficult to gain back trust once you create room for doubt.
I run several businesses, and one thing I do not take lightly is dishonest staff. Even if they believe their actions benefit the company, one dishonest employee can cause so many problems.
I always tell my team to feel comfortable talking to me and tell me when they do something wrong so we can find solutions together. I prefer uncomfortable honesty to being lied to.
Being Truthful in Business
It isn’t just about ‘lying’.
Avoiding the truth and exaggeration also demonstrate a lack of integrity.
As long as you are not completely honest, you lack integrity.
Intentionally omitting the truth, such as a medical company selling a drug without mentioning side effects, shows a lack of integrity. Overselling what you or a product can do shows a lack of integrity.
And if you can’t see the harm of overstating or leaving some facts out, think about this. What happens when you start to attract a stream of negative online reviews because the product didn’t do what you told the customer it would, or actually causes them harm?
You may see it as harmless, but it is deception and, once discovered, can do irreparable damage to the business.
Be Appreciated
If you are honest with your customers and they know what they are getting, it will be appreciated.
In business, integrity is everything. You can have an army of loyal customers if you are honest and trustworthy.
As a business owner or an employee, stay true to yourself and the people around you.
Do not try to be who you are not. Be transparent, loyal, and genuine. Make sure your foundation as an employee or entrepreneur is built on truth; otherwise, you’ll always struggle to keep up with your lies.
To be truthful in business is to establish a solid foundation for success.
