What is Investing Really About?

what-is-investing-really-about-2

What is investing? It’s a broad question about a vast subject.

This article focuses on what I believe are the two fundamental approaches to making investment decisions:

  • investing in a promising business idea, product, or concept
  • investing in the people, team, or founder behind it

Both approaches have their merits and risks, and understanding the dynamics between these two factors is crucial for making informed investment choices.

What Is Investing In An Idea?

Investing in a business idea, product, or concept entails evaluating the potential market demand, scalability, and profitability of the venture.

Here are some advantages of this approach:

  1. Tangible Value: A solid business idea with a unique product or concept can hold significant value in the market, making it an attractive investment opportunity.
  2. Market Potential: Assessing the potential demand for a product or concept allows investors to gauge the viability of the business idea and its likelihood of generating substantial returns.
  3. Innovation and Disruption: Investing in groundbreaking ideas or concepts that disrupt existing industries can lead to substantial growth and long-term success.

However, there are risks associated with this approach:

  1. Execution Challenges: Even the most promising business idea can falter if poorly executed. Without a capable team or founder, the potential of a great idea may never be realised.
  2. Market Volatility: The market landscape can change rapidly, rendering a once-promising business idea less relevant or obsolete. Investors need to consider the sustainability and adaptability of the concept over time.

What Is Investing In People?

Investing in the people, team, or founder behind a business idea acknowledges the crucial role of skilled and passionate individuals in driving a venture’s success.

Here are the advantages of this approach:

  1. Expertise and Experience: A competent and experienced team or founder can possess the necessary skills, industry knowledge, and networks to navigate challenges and drive business growth.
  2. Adaptability: People with a proven track record of successfully adapting to changing market conditions are more likely to steer a business idea toward profitability.
  3. Resilience and Passion: Investing in individuals with strong determination, resilience, and passion for their vision can enhance the chances of overcoming obstacles and achieving long-term success.

Nonetheless, there are potential downsides to consider:

  1. Dependency on Key Individuals: Relying heavily on one or a few key individuals can create vulnerabilities within the organisation. The absence or departure of these individuals could significantly impact the business’s performance.
  2. Limited Scalability: The success of a venture might be tied closely to the capabilities of the team or founder, limiting its potential for growth and scalability.

Finding the Balance

In reality, the most successful investments often require a combination of both approaches.

While a strong business idea provides a solid foundation, investing in the right team or founder can maximise its potential. The synergy between a compelling concept and a skilled team often leads to remarkable success.

Conclusion

So, what is investing? It’s about finding the balance between a good idea and the right people.

When deciding where to invest, striking a balance between evaluating a business idea and assessing the people, team, or founder is crucial. While a promising business idea can hold significant potential, it’s the individuals driving its execution who can turn that potential into reality.

Ultimately, successful investments often come down to the ability to identify exceptional ideas and match them with capable and dedicated teams or founders.
