Fantom, Polygon, or Ethereum Blockchain?

fantom-polygon-or-ethereum-blockchain

Blockchains are increasingly important in finance and technology, but which is right for you? Should you choose Fantom, Polygon, or Ethereum blockchain?

They have emerged as the prominent players in the decentralised ecosystem, each with unique benefits and disadvantages.

At Moni Talks, the cryptocurrency social and trading platform, we selected Fantom. But that might not be right for you.

Here, I compare the basics of the Fantom, Polygon, and Ethereum blockchain offerings to help give you some insight.

Ethereum Blockchain

Ethereum, introduced in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin, is regarded by many as the pioneer of smart contracts and decentralised applications (dApps).

It operates on a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, using energy-intensive mining. The primary currency on the Ethereum blockchain is Ether (ETH).

Despite being one of the biggest names, fees, speed, and scalability have all seen people looking elsewhere.

While Ethereum’s scalability limitations have been a concern, the Ethereum 2.0 upgrade addressed, to an extent, these issues through the implementation of Proof-of-Stake (PoS) and sharding.

Fantom Blockchain

Fantom, launched in 2018, differentiates itself from the Ethereum blockchain by offering fast and energy-efficient transactions.

It uses the Lachesis protocol, aBFT consensus, and a directed acyclic graph (DAG) structure. These features enable Fantom to achieve transaction finality within seconds, making it suitable for applications requiring near-instantaneous settlement.

Additionally, Fantom’s low transaction fees contribute to its appeal to developers and users. The Fantom network’s native currency is FTM.

Polygon Blockchain

Polygon, formerly known as Matic Network, serves as a Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum. It aims to alleviate Ethereum’s scalability issues by enabling faster and cheaper transactions through sidechains and a range of scaling techniques.

Polygon offers various modules, including PoS chains, which provide high throughput and improved efficiency. Polygon’s architecture allows for interoperability and seamless integration with Ethereum’s existing infrastructure, making it an attractive choice for developers. The MATIC token powers the Polygon network.

Comparing the Features

Scalability: While the Ethereum blockchain has faced challenges in handling high transaction volumes, Fantom and Polygon offer scalable solutions. Fantom achieves this through its DAG structure, while Polygon provides Layer 2 scaling techniques.

Speed and Transaction Finality: Fantom stands out with near-instant transaction finality, while Ethereum and Polygon have longer confirmation times due to their consensus mechanisms.

Gas Fees: Ethereum’s gas fees have been a point of contention, especially during periods of network congestion. Fantom and Polygon provide lower transaction fees, with Fantom offering exceptionally low fees.

Ecosystem and Adoption: Ethereum boasts the largest ecosystem of dApps and developers, along with wide acceptance in the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector. While Fantom and Polygon are gaining traction, they have yet to reach Ethereum’s level of adoption.

Fantom, Polygon, or Ethereum Blockchain Conclusion

Fantom, Polygon, and Ethereum blockchain offerings each bring unique strengths to the decentralised landscape.

Ethereum, as the pioneer, offers a vast ecosystem and continues to evolve with the Ethereum 2.0 upgrade. Fantom differentiates itself with high-speed transactions, energy efficiency, and low fees. Polygon enhances Ethereum’s scalability through Layer 2 solutions, enabling faster and cheaper transactions.

Choosing the right blockchain depends on specific project requirements and priorities. Ongoing advancements in blockchain technology mean new, innovative rivals are arriving all the time – so your choices may not just be between Fantom, Polygon, and Ethereum.
