In this article, we examine the current Litecoin price and the history of this cryptocurrency.
Litecoin Begins
Litecoin (LTC) was founded in 2011 by Charlie Lee, a former Google engineer. It came into existence two years after Bitcoin and was once considered a solid competitor to Bitcoin.
The significant difference between Bitcoin and Litecoin is that Bitcoin uses the SHA-256 algorithm while Litecoin uses a newer algorithm called Scrypt.
Lee described Litecoin as ‘the lite version of Bitcoin’. Many consider LTC an improved version of Bitcoin since it has more advanced and enhanced features.
Litecoin Price History
When Litecoin launched in 2013, 1 Litecoin was worth around $4.30. In May 2021, LTC hit an all-time high of more than $410.
Its all-time low of $1.11 was recorded on January 14, 2015.
Litecoin Price Today
According to CoinMarketCap, LTC is currently worth $61.28 (11.15am, August 16).
The arrival of other cryptocurrencies saw Litecoin’s popularity decline, but it retained a strong market position. Like many cryptos, LTC suffered as crypto markets plummeted in the first half of 2022.
There are, however, some signs of recovery.
What is Litecoin About?
Litecoin is a trusted, decentralised cryptocurrency that can be used as a platform for paying people anywhere in the world without needing a mediator to assist in the transaction process.
Litecoin has a fixed supply of 84 million and the network generates a new block every 2.5 minutes through mining.
Each new block is verified by mining software and made available to a miner. Once a miner verifies the block, the next block enters the chain, which is a record of every Litecoin transaction.
Like with Bitcoin, LTC miners are rewarded. Also like BTC, that reward reduces over time.
Every four years, the rewards reduce to half what they used to be.
Advantages of Litecoin
- Low transaction fee
- It is a highly functional cryptocurrency
- It is a peer-to-peer virtual currency (P2P)
Disadvantages of Litecoin
- Total anonymity.
Out of the 84 million LTCs that will ever be available, more than 70 million are in circulation, meaning there are fewer than 15 million Litecoin to be mined.
Is Litecoin a Good Investment?
As ever, I’ll begin by saying I do not offer investment advice. Before choosing whether to buy a cryptocurrency, you should conduct your own thorough, independent research.
Ensure you understand the coin, it fits with your investment strategy, and you never spend more than you can afford to lose.
Many investors view Litecoin as a trusted coin with a solid track record and future potential.
The Litecoin price is currently comparatively low, so there is room for the value to increase further as crypto markets continue to recover.
If LTC fits your investment strategy, it is worth consideration.
